How this is calculated
One-off costs are counted once at the start. Everything else is converted to an annual figure and multiplied by the expected lifespan.
The monthly figure shown is the ongoing cost only, so it reflects what the pet costs you once the setup is behind you.
The lifetime total includes setup, which is why it is so much larger than twelve times the monthly figure.
This deliberately excludes emergency treatment, because it is unpredictable rather than budgetable. Insurance is the line that covers it, and it is included.

Worked example
A dog at £800 with £450 of kit costs £1,250 before it comes home. Then £45 food, £30 insurance and £15 of extras a month is £1,080 a year, plus £750 of vet, grooming and boarding, so £1,830 a year or £152.50 a month. Over 13 years that totals £25,040 including setup.
Common questions
Why is the lifetime figure so much bigger than I expected?
Because small regular costs compound over a decade or more. Ninety pounds a month feels manageable and still totals over fourteen thousand pounds across a dog's life.
Should I include insurance if I plan to self-insure?
You can set it to zero, but then budget separately for emergencies. A single cruciate ligament repair or a swallowed object can run into thousands.
Do costs stay flat across a pet's life?
No. Insurance premiums climb sharply with age and veterinary needs increase in the final years. The average this produces is a fair planning figure, but the later years cost more than the early ones.
Does this cover more than cats and dogs?
The structure works for any animal. Change the lifespan and the figures to match, since a rabbit, a horse and a parrot have very different profiles.
